South Boston is a densely populated neighborhood in Boston, Massachusetts, located south of the
Fort Point Channel and abutting Dorchester Bay. It was formerly known as Dorchester Neck
and today is referred to as "Southie" by its residents. South Boston is well known for being
an Irish-Catholic neighborhood. Almost all of the parishes are Irish-Catholic, the majority
of restaurants and pubs Irish themed, and several Irish-American Clubs are located there.
The politicians who represent the area are all Irish-Catholic.
Residents enjoy the best of both worlds in this seaside community, with an easy commute
to downtown via Broadway and Andrew Squares on the Red Line and an equally short trip
to the beach. All types of apartments and homes can be found here, including multi-families and
open-air lofts. Rents tend to be less expensive than many other portions of the city, although prices are rising.
The City Point area of South Boston, labeled "East Side" by realtors, has seen a major increase
in property values due to its close proximity to downtown Boston and gentrification.
Formerly a place of empty lots, abandoned buildings, and industrial activity, South Boston now has
several hundred high-end condos, upscale restaurants, and new life.
Boston Harborwalk is an inviting public walkway around Boston Harbor, with parks, seating areas, boat ramps, cafes, exhibit areas, interpretive signage, water transportation facilities, and a wide range of other amenities.
